SIRAK ASFAW

Director - Dallas College - sirak@anyfocus.org | blog

Growing up in Windsor, Ontario, I never imagined that moving to Texas in 2000 would completely change the trajectory of my life. As a college student at Collin College, I was searching for something more than just classes and grades—I was looking for real community and purpose. That's when I discovered FOCUS, and everything clicked. The authentic relationships and genuine faith community I found there didn't just impact my college experience—it transformed my entire life. I finally understood what it meant to have Jesus as Lord, not just as a concept I'd heard about, but as a living reality. Now, as Director of Dallas College FOCUS, I get to pay it forward every single day. Armed with degrees in Sociology and experience teaching at Richland College, I combine my love for understanding people with my passion for helping students find what I found: a community where they belong and a Savior who changes everything. I believe every college student deserves more than just a degree—they deserve to discover who God created them to be. When you support my work, you're helping create spaces where students don't just survive college, but thrive in an authentic community and discover their calling in Christ.

Becca Thurston

Campus Missionary - Dallas College - becca.wilson@anyfocus.org | blog

As a former student at Collin College, community college students hold a special place in my heart. My freshman year at Collin was a pivotal time for me; it’s when I got connected to FOCUS and learned that Jesus was inviting me and all disciples to live life on mission with him. I began to know Jesus deeper as I went out on campus with my friends to invite others students to follow him. After Collin, I transferred to and graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a BS in Nutrition and Health Education. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of loving and serving college students as a vocation; welcoming them into Jesus-centered community and teaching them to follow Jesus not just now, but for the rest of their lives. After four years of working with the colleges in Denton, I am thrilled to return to my community college roots and serve at Dallas College: Richland Campus.

He graduated in 2020 and went to work for Texas Instruments as an engineer in their R&D department for 5 years. 2024 was full of tough moments, and through that year Casey was renewed with the love of God as the Spirit showed him who God truly was. Casey came back from TI with a heart ready for ministry and more clarity than ever. Now he gets to live everyday being called “unc” by college students. Casey loves to pray, and you can stop him anytime to randomly pray about anything. Literally. He also spent some time in Greece helping start a house church and loves to talk about it way too much, so next time you see him feel free to tell him,”we get it, you lived in Greece.”

Lailah is a San Francisco native who graduated from Howard University with a BFA in Dance. Following graduation in 2015, she worked with Dallas Black Dance Theatre for 6 years as a dancer and dance teacher. In year 5 of her time at DBDT, a co-worker, friend, and FOCUS grad studied the Bible with her, and it was there that her desire to follow Christ emerged. As her new walk with Christ deepened, so did her hunger for being an effective disciple. With that goal in mind, she decided to transition from her dance career to the FOCUS apprenticeship, and expects to learn how to love people and be a trustworthy leader for Christ in the world.
